And Meow, A Word About Cat Furniture

October 1, 2023

Does your feline pal have a few things of her own, items she doesn’t have to share with her humans? If so, that’s great. As you may have noticed, cats are very opportunistic nappers. Fluffy won’t have a hard time finding herself spots to curl up, stretch out, or flop down on for all of those naps. However, it’s good for her to have a few things of her own. A local Brantford, ON vet discusses kitty furniture in this article.

Cat Towers

The cat tower is the ultimate piece of cat furniture. These serve several purposes: they offer Fluffy a lookout point, napping spot, jungle gym, and manicure station. Position it in front of a window with a good view for maximum purrs.

Beds

Fluffy is very, very sleepy. In fact, your furry little friend can spend as much as 20 hours a day. Fortunately, our feline overlords aren’t particularly picky about beds: they’ll literally sleep on just about anything. Your kitty will appreciate having some comfy beds to choose from, though. Store-bought beds are fine, but you can also fold up some blankets and put them in boxes or wicker baskets.

Scratching Posts

Fluffy’s manicure habits can be pretty frustrating for her humans, especially if she’s using a chair or sofa as a nail-care station. This is definitely a case of ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’. Kitties have a very strong instinctive urge to keep their nails sharp. This makes purrfect sense: after all, kitties depend on their paw daggers for survival in the wild. Make sure your cat has a suitable scratching post. It should be tall or high enough to allow your feline friend to stretch while she’s doing her nails, and sturdy enough so that it doesn’t wobble.

Tips

Shopping for kitty furniture isn’t rocket science, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Age is one of them. If you have a kitten, it may be tempting to get something that is little Fluffy’s size. However, your furry pal will likely outgrow it in a few months. Older cats, on the other paw, will probably prefer having things that are easy to get on and off. If you have multiple kitties, choose multiple pieces and/or things that will fit all of them. Otherwise, they may fight over who gets to use the scratching post!
