Fleas

A single female flea can lay up to 100,000 eggs in her lifetime of approximately 14 days! Fortunately there are some new strategies to make the battle of the flea safer and more effective. No more toxic collars, sprays, or flea baths. These are the three approaches to flea control;

* Prevention
* Treatment - whether fleas are present or not
* Wait and see - treat only if necessary

Prevention
The most successful prevention sterilizes the female fleas so that none of her eggs can hatch. Following this approach, you may see the occasional flea, but it is very unlikely you will get an infestation. Ovicollar, Program and Sentinel are the current products available that work this way. For cats, an injection of Program will last the entire flea season if given in the spring.

Treatment
When there is a need to ensure no living fleas are present at any time, treatments are available that will kill the adult flea within 90 seconds of contact with your pet. Your pet then acts as a "flea magnet" and within 24 to 48 hours, most living fleas in your home are gone! Existing larvae and egg stages will continue to develop over the next 2 months. For this reason treatment in repeated monthly. Advantage, Revolution, Capstar and Defend are the available products in this category. These products can be used monthly in a preventive way from June until November or used monthly when a flea infestation is discovered.
