Do pets go to heaven? Why do pets get the same diseases as their owners? Why do pets show us unconditional love? Does God listen to prayers for our pets? Why do bad things happen to our loving pets? I look after my pets well, God is pleased with me isn’t He?

These are just a few of the profound questions that get posed to me on a regular basis. I have come to understand that the “scientific” way of explaining our world falls far short of a satisfactory answer for questions like these.

Although my belief in a Creator had been a generic sort of god for many years, it wasn’t until I started to get to know the God of the Bible that I could grapple with these deep issues. I am aware that many people are busy just trying to get by without digging too deep in these areas. Through in-depth study of the Bible, I have found satisfaction not only to the deep yearnings of my imperfect soul, but also practical answers for life here and now.

As I continue with these coments, I hope to address some of the questions that people ask me and share my thoughts with you. Feel free to drop me an e-mail (or a note in the regular mail) with questions or comments. (drmulder@fairviewpet.ca) It is my desire to create a forum where we can share insights together.

Since our last newsletter, when we announced the Faith Page, I have had the opportunity to discuss spiritual matters both as they pertain to pets and as a primary topic with many of you. Since coming to faith in Jesus Christ, there is nothing I enjoy more than celebrating what has happened in my life by His gift and finding out what He is doing in other people’s lives. Some of you have seen me get animated over various aspects of medicine and may find the above statement hard to believe but it is true.

For me, understanding medicine, helping broken bodies heal and helping people through the loss of a pet are all incredibly spiritual experiences. I am in awe of my Creator when I examine the inside of a cat’s eye or when assessing an X-ray of developing teeth. These are such amazing engineering feats that I am drawn to praise our Creator and wonder at His wisdom. There are also times of such sorrow and loss that the only thing that keeps my perspective is the knowledge that a good God is holding it all together no matter how crazy things may seem. I take it by faith that He is working a good purpose through it all, even when I do not understand.

Some of you may not relate to my experience and I am sure that some may think I should stick to medicine. But I cannot! My spiritual being is woven together with my medical mind and my physical activities too. To that end I continue to study veterinary medicine, train for my athletic pursuits and study God’s Word. One of my favourite inspirational verses is from a letter written 2000 years ago. Paul wrote to his friend Timothy that he should “Rather train [himself] for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” This “training in godliness” is an exciting journey. Anyone wishing to participate in this spiritual pursuit can either join me on Mondays 7-8am for a men’s study or my wife Nancy on Wednesdays between 9-12 for a women’s group. Call or e-mail me for details.

Nothing on earth is more sobering than talk about hell. As real as the hope of heaven is, so too is the reality of hell.
