Annual Examinations - Wellness Examinations
Not just "shots". Vaccines were originally thought to be the "silver bullet" - a simple solution to many diseases. They were given regularly with little thought about the possibility of vaccinating too much. After all, if one is good, two is better? right? Wrong! We have since realized that each patient must be carefully examined and assessed to ensure that the vaccine will not cause any harm and that it will give protection. We evaluate each circumstance, for your pet, to ensure the correct and useful vaccinations are provided in a timely fashion. Increased demand for tests to measure the effectiveness of vaccines have dramatically decreased the cost and made "titre testing" an attractive option.
With the emphasis shifting to a medical approach for the whole pet, pets are receiving complete physical examinations (remember: once a year for them is like once every seven for us!), screening tests for early detection of disease, and vaccine titre tests.
After completing a vaccine risk assessment with our technicians, you and Dr. Mulder can decide which vaccines are appropriate for your pet this year. At Fairview Drive Pet Hospital this is just one of the ways we strive to give care specific to your pets needs.
We ask that your pet be fasted (no food) for 8-12 hours prior to their annual physical examination. This allows our veterinarian to better examine your pet's abdomen. We also recommend wellness blood tests for early detection of disease. This requires fasting for accurate results.
Your pet needs to have a yearly microscopic examination of his stool to ensure he has not been infected by intestinal parasites. There is a potential for transmission to you and your children with certain parasites. Your pet can be easily treated if infected.
